History of Graphic Design. The term “graphic design” first seemed in a 1922 essay by William Addison Dwiggins called “New Kind of Printing Calls for New Design.” As a book designer, Dwiggins invented the term to describe how he prepared and accomplished visuals in his works.
Graphic Design Roots
Evolution of Graphic design or graphic design roots can be found all the way back to 15,000 BC, when the first known visual communications arose. These pictographs and symbols are existing in the Lascaux caves in southern France. Fast-forward several thousand years, and you’ll notice the Blau Monument. It’s the first recognized artifact to use both words and pictures on it.
Of course, these designed art pieces are far from what we think of as graphic design today; but they facilitated spark the idea of placing images on surfaces, putting us on the path towards things like drawings, posters, banners, and more.
Growth of Graphic Designing
Since the time of the Industrial uprising, graphic design had been enabling its way into business practices, and in the 1900s, its use exploded. In 1901, Frank Lloyd Wright released “The Art and Craft of the Machine,” which comprised basic ideologies still recommended in modern design.
With the growth of the advertising industry and color printing, businesses started creating logos to help brand their company. History of Graphic Design Today
Today, graphic design refers mainly to designing visuals for magazines, books, advertisements, and digital posters. This intensive branch of design includes the art form of interactive ideas through visuals and text.
Graphic designers still practice drawings and paintings in some cases, but much of graphic design today is completed using digital technologies. These modern graphic design skills can be useful to custom logo design, book cover design, magazine layouts, billboard advertisements, clothing design, online banner ads, and much more.
In the late 20th century, digital tools removed the pencils and paintbrushes from our hands, and delivered new, revolutionary methods of making and distributing graphic designs. Photoshop, for example, launched in 1990, as a graphics editing platform that anyone could use to form professional-grade designs. More elementary programs like Microsoft Paint also completed graphic art accessible to the masses.
Even the way we interact with graphic design changed. In 1984, Apple introduced the Macintosh computer. It contained a simple, user-friendly interface and said “Hello”—presenting us to computerized world that was developed for consumers and that invited consumers be creator themselves.
An illustration is a visual representation such as a drawing, painting, photograph or other work of art that stresses subject more than form. The aim of an illustration is to deliver a story, poem or piece of textual information (such as a newspaper article), traditionally by providing a visual representation of something defined in the text. The editorial cartoon, also known as a political cartoon, is an illustration containing a political or social message.
Illustrations can be displayed a wide range of subject matter and serve a variety of functions, such as:
- giving faces to characters in a story
- displaying a number of examples of an item described in an academic textbook (e.g. A Typology)
- visualizing step-wise sets of instructions in a technical manual
- communicating subtle thematic tone in a narrative
- linking brands to the ideas of human expression, individuality, and creativity
- making a reader laugh or smile
- for fun (to make laugh) funny
Graphics are visual components often used to point readers and viewers to particular information. They are also used to supplement text in an effort to aid readers in their understanding of a particular concept or make the concept more clear or interesting.
In computing, they are used to create a graphical interface for the user; and graphics are one of the five key elements of multimedia technology. Graphics are among the primary ways of advertising the sale of goods or services.
