Engineering Design Process

What is Engineering Design Process?

An engineer is a calculated person, before taking any step forward; he plans a process, looks at the outcomes, seeks for all the drawbacks, and then proceeds step by step. All this mapping out of ways helps in problem solving and can make any person’s approach powerful and flexible enough to deal with any kind of situation. Engineering Design Process is considered the main core of any engineering work. To understand the concept let’s dive into the detail of this method.

The engineering design process is basically a series of steps; it includes step-by-step methods which engineers or engineer teams follow to finally come up with a solution to the current problem. It is an iterative process which means we can repeat the steps as many times as we want to; making improvements along the way after learning the mistakes or better approaches to uncover the latest, economical, and perfect design possibilities for the problem.

Another important concept to understand in terms of the Engineering design process is; Engineers do not always have to follow up the entire step-by-step procedure in order, one after another. The whole concept scenario is to design something, test it, find the problem, and then go back to the previous step to make a modification in your design’s approach.

Steps of the Engineering Design Process:

The main steps for the engineering design process are as follows:

  1. Identify the Problem: The initial step, to begin with, is by identifying the problem which needs a solution.
  2. Define the Problem: Defining the problem includes all the critical questions such as What is the problem that needs to be solved? Why is it necessary to find a solution? Which things are at stake? What can be the limitation and requirements for this process? Etc.
  3. Do Background Research: After identifying and defining the problem the next step is to do thorough background research. Learn from the experience of others; this can help you a lot to understand existing solutions for similar problems, and which things or steps can be avoided; aren’t necessary.
  4. Imagine and Choose Possible Solutions: There are always many good possibilities for solving a single problem. Look at each possible solution and figure out the best choice according to your design requirement and budget.
  5. Consider Alternative Solutions: Every problem has more than a single solution. So, if you don’t consider alternative solutions before determining the best pick, it is almost certain that you might be overlooking a better solution than the picked one. Therefore, a good engineer tries to generate and evaluate all the possible solutions.
  6. Plan & develop the Promising Solution: This is the first step towards finalizing and includes the refinement and improvement of the solution, and it continues throughout the design process.
  7. Create a Model: A model is actually an operating version of the chosen solution.  The model is composed of usually cheaper and economical material to just understand the working mechanism. It basically works as a pre-final product which allows the engineer to test how the solution will work.
  8. Test and Evaluate the Model: Each model will need testing and improvement. The testing and evaluation of models allow you to identify where any improvements can be added.
  9. Improve the Model; Redesign accordingly: Once testing is done, the design now can be revised and improved accordingly; you can decide upon and create your finished solution.
  10. Communicate Results: The final stage to complete your project/task is to communicate your result. This can be done in form of a report, presentation, or documented file which contains the information on each step.
