The engineering design process is basically a series of steps; it includes step-by-step methods which engineers or engineer teams follow to finally come up with a solution to the current problem. It is an iterative process which means we can repeat the steps as many times as we want to; making improvements along the way after learning the mistakes or better approaches to uncover the latest, economical, and perfect design possibilities for the problem.

Another important concept to understand in terms of the Engineering design process is; Engineers do not always have to follow up the entire step-by-step procedure in order, one after another. Steps of the Engineering Design Process:

The main steps for the engineering design process are as follows:

Learn from the experience of others; this can help you a lot to understand existing solutions for similar problems, and which things or steps can be avoided; aren’t necessary.
  4. Imagine and Choose Possible Solutions: There are always many good possibilities for solving a single problem. Look at each possible solution and figure out the best choice according to your design requirement and budget.
  5. Consider Alternative Solutions: Every problem has more than a single solution. So, if you don’t consider alternative solutions before determining the best pick, it is almost certain that you might be overlooking a better solution than the picked one. Therefore, a good engineer tries to generate and evaluate all the possible solutions.
  6. Plan & develop the Promising Solution: This is the first step towards finalizing and includes the refinement and improvement of the solution, and it continues throughout the design process.
  7. Create a Model: A model is actually an operating version of the chosen solution.  The model is composed of usually cheaper and economical material to just understand the working mechanism. It basically works as a pre-final product which allows the engineer to test how the solution will work.
